Limetree Beach I

Like many things that seem to come in 3′s, I had my 3rd wedding at Limetree Beach (aka Bluebeard’s Beach) yesterday.  So before I get into the post-production work, let me quickly share the first two.

Very Romantic

Lindsy and John had a beautiful late afternoon wedding on an almost empty Limetree Beach.   The sun was starting to drop and the lighting was perfect for wonderfully romantic photos.  They brought the romance .  I captured the images.  The perfect combination of love and artistry. It was little warm but a lot  more comfortable than their home state of Michigan this time of year, I’m sure.  Congratulations Lindsy & John.

Sailing Away II

"Sailing..... Sailing Away...."

As in my last post, Angelita and David too, decided to incorporate sailing into their big day.  Their plans were a little different, however.  They came to St. Thomas via cruise ship and were only on island for the one day.  Since they brought a lot of family, their wedding coordinator, Michelle from Island Wedding Services, booked a Safari Bus to transport everyone to the Sapphire Marina where they boarded  the 65′ sloop “New Horizons” and sailed across Pillsbury Sound to Honeymoon Beach, St. John for the ceremony.  After the ceremony and a photo session, they all reboarded the boat for a fabulous lunch and a day of sailing the Caribbean Sea.

New Horizons is a great way to go.  It is a beautiful & comfortable sail boat that is easy to get around.  Angelita and David had a beautiful day with perfect wind to enjoy it all.  Everyone had a great time and we got some fantastic images that will forever remind them of their unique and special day.

Congratulations Angelita and David!  I can almost hear Celine Dion in the background.

Sailing Away

Wayward Sailor & a Setting Sun

Sail away into a sunset and get married?  What a great idea.

In March, Aqueelah, on leave from the Air Force, returned home from Germany with her fiance Aaron to get married on St. John.  Her plan was to sail aboard the “Wayward Sailor”, a classic 30′ Islander Sloop, with Captain Phil (who has been chartering boats out of St. John for 21 years and their wedding officiant) from Cruz Bay to Henley Cay (pronounced “Key”) for a small intimate wedding.  Getting married on Henley Cay, barely bigger than a postage stamp, a few hundred yards off of Caneel Bay, was a wonderfully romantic and unique idea except for two things:  Grandmas.  Both Aqueelah’s Grandmas wanted to attend their granddaughter’s wedding and they were not up for sailing.

A quick change of plans and we did the ceremony on Hawksnest Beach followed by a sunset sail.  It turned out perfect and, of course, her Grandmas were very very happy.

Congratulations Aqueelah & Aaron!  All the Best to you Both and Thank You Both for your service to our country.  –Eric

Bolongo Bay Wedding, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Catherine & Paul who were recently married at the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort.  You two look great together and made my job easy.  Congrats also to Bolongo Bay Weddings for creating a beautiful setting for weddings with a flower covered bamboo arch and palm tree lined aisle.  It was beautiful and we really rocked it with our post ceremony photo shoot.  The late afternoon setting sun gave us gorgeous light that enhanced Catherine and Paul’s overflowing love and romance.  Wow!

Daughter Update

Allow me a moment to be a little self indulgent.  I’m a proud Papa who’s little girl has, as we say in the Caribbean, “made” 7 months.  I don’t know what to say except  Precious!  Precious!  Precious!  Okay, a lot self indulgent.

A special thanks to wardrobe contributors, Sheri & Carmella for the pink tye-dye, Taylor for the Strawberry Cap, Angela, Josh & Donna for the yellow flower hat, “G-Mommy” for the jean jacket and Penny & John for the Polo outfit.  The biggest thanks, of course, goes to my wife for our little “model”.  She’s so much fun to work with.

Can you tell?

Going Urban in the Caribbean

Who says the Caribbean is all sand, sea, and sunshine?  This is a quick blog for people who might be looking for family, couple, or wedding photography while they are here in the Virgin Islands but want something other than portraits on the beach.  Or maybe, they want to add a little something extra to their beach wedding and make an uncommon stop for some fabulous portraits.

This year, I have already booked 2 weddings at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef Hotel.  (Yes, it is possible for me to shoot weddings at the Reef.  For brides who’s wedding photography is very important, who know what they want, and demand it, they can book me at the Marriott instead of using the “house” photographer.)  Anyway, I digress.  My point is, after seeing some of my urban portraiture, both couples have decided that after the ceremony they want to go to town to get some dramatic images with the Old World Charm of Charlotte Amalie.

The first couple, Katherine & Justin, booked me for 2 hours so we could stop in town for a late afternoon photo session on our way to Brewer’s Beach where family and friends were waiting.  The 2nd couple, Amanda & Bryan, had planned a beach wedding with a lunch reception at Herve’s Restaurant on Government Hill.  Rare inclement weather, however, forced the wedding off the beach and the ceremony took place on the veranda of the restaurant.  Afterwards, we toured the neighborhood having fun creating timeless portraits.

Enjoy!  Let me know what you think.  Ej

Everlasting Love!

Yesterday, the last day of January 2011, was a beautiful sunny day and it was the highlight of my year so far.  They say “sometimes the best things in life are free” and they also say “that giving is better than receiving.”  Now I don’t know who “they” are but sometimes “they” get it right.  I can’t really go into it at this time.   All I can really say is that it was a real joy to do it and I’ll let you all know what night it is going to air on a major network.  Curious?  I know.  It was really cool.

You know what else makes me happy?  Vow-renewals.  In earlier blogs, I’ve mentioned how much I love weddings.  Vow-renewals, however, are their own special event.  At vow-renewals I’ve photographed, there is rarely any Pomp, let alone Circumstance, (whatever that is).  It’s usually just the couple with and sometimes without the kids.  It is always small and intimate and special.  It is an event that couples do for a myriad of reasons, but it is an event that gives us newbies hope in “everlasting love” and everyone else a renewed faith that it does exist.

Vow-renewals are different than weddings.   The puppy love, the infatuation, and the lust has faded and the expectations of marrying a perfect partner has disappeared.  In it’s place, however, has grown a love that is much greater.  It is a love that has left the head and sunk into the heart or even deeper into the soul.

It is a love with a history that only the couple share.  (No matter how many supporting actors and extras, marriage truly is a stage set only for the two primary actors.  i.e. It isn’t called “Romeo & Juliet & Their Crazy Cousins, Near Sighted Parents, a Maid & a Monk”  It’s called “Romeo & Juliet”.)  Their history includes diapers & disappointments, accomplishments & failures, successes & shared hurts, a lot of laughs and more than a few tears for sure.  More importantly, it is a history of forgiveness & spiritual growth.  It is a love that only the well seasoned can fully comprehend for it goes way beyond the youthful mountain top cry “YooHoo!  We did it!  We’re married!”  Instead, it is a quiet declaration to each other that “looking back over everything, through the laughter & the tears, I Love You, and I’d do it all again……… but only with you.”

That’s awesome!

My last photo shoot of 2010 was John & Laura’s 10 year vow renewal on Lindquist Beach, St. Thomas.  The “bride” was excited about the photo shoot after the ceremony and the “groom” asked “do we really need that many pictures?”  (Typical guy, right?)  In the end, they both had so much fun it was John who kept thanking me for such a great time.

And what did the bride say?  (from an e-mail)  ”Thank you so much Eric, they’re beautiful! You are SUCH a talented photographer. I am thrilled with our experience and with how well the photos turned out! I couldn’t be more pleased. You did a wonderful job capturing the special moments.  I will always smile when I look at these photographs….”  –Laura

John & Laura:  Thank You!  Thank you for refueling our hope in everlasting love.  It was a great way to end the year.  –Eric

Correction:  Earlier I wrote, “always small and intimate” now let me correct myself and mention that every year on Valentine’s Day St. John wedding officiant Anne Marie does a, “tourist or local all are welcome”, sunset Vow-Renewal ceremony on Trunk Bay Beach, St John.  A fellow photographer, who covers it every year for the local paper, tells me that it is way cool.  Guess what we’re doing for Valentine’s Day?  Don’t tell my wife, even though we haven’t yet reached our 2nd anniversary, we’ll be there and out to dinner afterwards.  It will be a wonderful Valentine’s Day shared with many couples still in LOVE.  –Eric

Happy New Year!

2010 was a blessed and wonderful year.  As some of you know, my wife Ashlee and I had our first child Zoe at the end of June.  Her mid-year arrival made 2010 kind of like a roller coaster that begins with a slow steep climb of anticipation and a little nervousness but once past the apex, the point of no return, it becomes a heart leaping ride of some fear and uncertainty.   Then if you dare to let go, so to speak, it becomes a screaming thrilling arm raised ride of jubilation.  Our lives have been forever changed and I can say, without hesitation, it has been the best year ever.  What a ride.  I am definitely winded but I can’t quit grinning.

While I might say the 2nd half of the year flew by like a theme park ride, it is the tiny things that brought, and keep bringing, the most joy:  the good morning stretches and smiles, the kicks and the coos, the big eyes of wonder and Zoe’s fascination with ceiling fans.  It is amazing how she recognizes Daddy’s voice with a quick head turn and a smile but then she’s also never truly happy until Mommy is home.  ”Daddy you’re all right, glad you’re here and all, but where’s the pretty one with my dinner?”  There is her thick head of dark hair, her long eye lashes, and her own signature laugh that flatters me into thinking I could make a living at being funny.  We are truly blessed.

We ended the year with a whirlwind Christmas trip through the NW visiting a ton of family and friends who were anxious to meet the new member of our family.  The trip was, as always, way to short but somehow Zoe was able to meet and be held by 64 friends and family as we put 1,000 miles on the rental car.  We spent some time on Day Island with Aunt Donna, my Mom, cousins Angela & Josh, Kacey & Ray.   Then in Seattle for Christmas Eve, there was Aunt Mary, Aunt Karen, cousins Ruth, Ian & Catherine, Maurita & James and their children Elliot, Lucas, & Madeline.  We celebrated being together and watched ancient home movies of  Christmases past recorded on shaky blotchy 8mm film.  Christmas Day was at Grandma Doris & Ralph’s where Grandma got to hold the 15th of her Great-Grand-Children.  The video is precious.

Later in Eugene Oregon (“Go Ducks!”)  it was great to see my nephew Jonathan, great friends Mark & Leslie, Ben & Taylor, Steve & Sally, Baylee & Harrison, then uncle Bill & aunt Linda, cousins Karen & Ben, Elizabeth & Emily.  On another night it was my dear friends Sheri & Rob, Carmella & Jacob & Brie, Percy & Linda, Marv & Marilyn, then uncle Mike & aunt Sharon, the Meili’s, the Russnogels, the Elmores, Hank & Bev, cousin Joe & Tina and my sister Heidi.  Then by sheer coincidence and serendipity, in the lobby during the opera La Boheme,  Ashlee and I ran into wonderful friends Holly & Lance and their daughter Hannah.  Unplanned, I was so glad that happened.  In Portland for New Year’s Eve, it was cousin Mike & Trace and Olivia and Suze.  Then out of the cold NW wind came friends from long ago days at Seattle Pacific Univ.  JD & Amy and Jay & Donna.  Wow!  That was a surprise flash from the past.  Thanks for pulling that together Mike.  It was a fun time.

After Portland, we returned to Seattle to see Grandma & Ralph again and cousin Kim before catching the red-eye to Newark and then back to St. Thomas.

Previously, I mentioned watching ancient home movies on Christmas Eve.  It was fun to be with family and revisit some childhood days.  Later, however, in  reflection I counted 9 who are no longer with us and need to be named:  my grandparents Millie & Lorin, uncle Harry & aunt Dorothy, uncle David, uncle Rex, my cousins Ross & Blaire, and my father Phil.  (Not in those movies but still dearly missed are uncle Ed and grandpa Walt)  Let me just say I miss you all and thanks for being there.  I’m sorry you missed holding Zoe.

The home movies also gave me a chance to reflect on why I love being a photographer.  This year I recorded over 60 weddings, several family trips to the VI, a few pregnancies (pregnancy is so incredibly beautiful), and a couple new babies which have all been fantastically fun.  How awesome is that?  Forever, hundreds of people will be able to revisit 2010 milestone moments in their and their families lives through beautiful pictures created by me.  That’s pretty cool.

2010 was a great year and we ended it with a fun trip spending the holidays with family and friends.  A big thanks and huge hugs go out to everyone who helped make Zoe’s first Christmas a special one.  You all mean a lot to us.   Life without family would be pretty boring and extremely depressing.  To my Mom, thank you.  We had a great time and we love you very much.  And to everyone else who’s reading this?  Have a fun 2011 and take lots of pictures! Eric

In the garden

Leah & Jason of Dallas Texas were married on December 20 in the gardens of Villa Botanica on St. Thomas, USVI.  It was a small but fun wedding with just family and lots of pictures.  Villa Botanica is a beautiful venue with 2 wedding location options.  There is the lush garden area and the pool deck with a view of Charlotte Amalie.  Leah and Jason chose the garden and here are some of the pictures.  I wish we’d had more time.  Unfortunately, we only had an hour to shoot pictures.  Again, everyone jumped for joy.  –Ej

Lindquist Beach Wedding, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

As 2010 is about to close, let me end the year with a few quick blogs from my December weddings.

On December 8, Alice and Kenny, high school sweethearts from Alberta Canada, escaped the cold with family and friends and married on Lindquist Beach.   They arrived on St. Thomas via cruise ship and then rode a Saffari Bus out to Lindquist Beach.  It was a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony and afterwards everyone jumped for joy.
